The Challenge
How do you let a banks & merchants feel the future of checkout?
Visa needed a way to show partners — not tell them — what connected retail looks like when payments disappear into the experience itself. A slide deck wouldn’t do it. A prototype that broke mid-demo would do worse.
The brief: a permanent, AR Smart Mirror with Virtual Dressing that lives in the lab, runs every day, and convinces a CMO in under three minutes about the future of shopping.
CONTEXT
Why a smart mirror, in a region defined by mobile-first commerce.
CEMEA is one of the fastest-evolving payments regions in the world. Tap penetration in the UAE has crossed the tipping point, and Kenya’s mobile-money rails have rewritten what consumers expect from a checkout. Visa’s Innovation Labs exist to make that pace tangible — to give bank executives, finance ministers, and merchant CMOs a place to stand inside the next five years of retail.
The dressing room was a deliberate choice. It is the highest-friction moment in physical retail — and the moment where the seam between discovery, decision, and payment is most visible. If we could make that seam disappear, the rest of the store would feel obvious.
Visa also needed something resilient. The labs host hundreds of tours a year, often back-to-back, frequently with no warning. The mirror had to behave less like a prototype and more like an appliance — boot in seconds, recover from any state, and never embarrass the host.
Our Approach
Four phases, one installation.
01 — Discovery
Stakeholder workshops with Visa CEMEA, partner banks, and merchant leads to define the demo narrative and success criteria.
02 — Experience Design
Storyboarded the three-minute journey: walk up, try on, shop the look, tap to pay — choreographed to feel inevitable.
03 — Build
Custom AR engine, product catalogue CMS, and touchless checkout SDK with Tap, Scan-to-Pay QR, and FacePay flows.
04 — Install & Operate
Hardware integration, on-site commissioning in Dubai and Nairobi, and a remote ops dashboard so the lab team can refresh content without us.

OUTCOMES
A Magic Mirror demo that earns its place on the tour, every single week.
Since launch, the Virtual Dressing AR Mirror has become the most frequently requested stop on the Visa Innovation Center tour in Dubai, and a central exhibit in Nairobi. Partner banks now bring their own merchant clients into the lab specifically to walk them through the experience.
More than fifty bank and merchant partners have been onboarded to future Visa pilots off the back of the demo — checkout flows that previously took multiple meetings to explain are now understood in the three minutes it takes to try on a jacket.
Internally, the platform has become a reference architecture: the CMS, payment SDK, and ops dashboard are being reused for follow-on installs across additional CEMEA markets.
